License type guide

OEM License

An OEM license is sold pre-installed on new hardware by the device manufacturer and is tied to that machine for life. It is the cheapest genuine Windows/Office channel but cannot legally move to another computer.

Key points

Sold only pre-installed on new hardware by the manufacturer
Locked to the first device it activates on — no transfers
Support is the responsibility of the manufacturer, not Microsoft
Usually the cheapest genuine channel per device

Pros & cons

Advantages

  • Lowest price per device of any genuine channel
  • Pre-activated out of the box — no setup step
  • Manufacturer handles warranty and support

Drawbacks

  • Dies with the machine — a motherboard replacement can void it
  • Cannot be reassigned to a new device
  • No downgrade rights in most consumer OEM SKUs

Transferability

Not transferable — bound to the original device for the life of the license.

Best for

  • Buying a new PC you expect to keep for its whole life
  • Builders activating one machine permanently
  • Budget-conscious buyers who accept non-transferability

Frequently asked questions

Can I move an OEM license to a new PC?+
No. An OEM license is legally tied to the computer it was first activated on. When that machine is retired, the license retires with it; a new PC needs its own license.
What happens to my OEM license if I replace the motherboard?+
A motherboard replacement is treated as a new device, so activation generally fails (you may see 0x803FA067 or 0xC004F211). If the board was replaced under warranty by the manufacturer, they can usually re-issue activation.
Is an OEM key bought separately from hardware legitimate?+
Genuine OEM licenses are licensed to be sold pre-installed on hardware. A standalone OEM key sold without any hardware is a grey area at best and often a volume key misuse — buy retail or ESD when you are supplying your own machine.
Who supports an OEM license — Microsoft or the manufacturer?+
The manufacturer. That is the trade-off for the lower price: your support path for both Windows itself and the install is the OEM's support channel, not Microsoft's.
